Description Asian Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) rhyzhomes that come in assorted sizes, shape, and colored blooms. Lotus are hardy in Northern Illinois and prefer calm waters. New growth is anticipated in late May, producing hydrophobic leaves that become aerial. There’s only two recognized species of lotus in the Nelumbo genus, the other is Nelumbo lutea; American lotus.
